WHAT

IS THE

FIT-TEST?

The fit-test is a brief standardized physical fitness analysis to measure strength, endurance and flexibility. Results are based on norms derived from the population similar to you. The fitness assessment includes tests that measure components of health-related physical fitness including cardiorespiratory fitness, flexibility, muscular strength and muscular endurance.

Why is a fit-test important?

A fit test is a great way to:

  • Detect your strengths and weaknesses

  • Identify any need for a specific exercise prescription

  • Establish what steps need to be taken toward improvement

Measure Your Cardiovascular Health!

The YMCA 3-minute Bench Step Test is based on how quickly your heart rate recovers following a short bout of exercise. Studies show cardiovascular health is correlated to a longer more enjoyable life, weight loss, increased stamina, reduced fatigue, reduced risk of many conditions, including obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, stroke and certain types of cancer among many other benefits. Daily aerobic activity is an important part of your fitness routine.

Measure Your Abdominal Muscular Endurance!

The muscles in your abdomen, lower back and pelvis, known as your core muscles, help protect your back and connect upper and lower body movements. Core exercises help train your muscles to brace the spine and enable you to use your upper and lower body muscles more effectively. The curl-up or sit-up test is an effective measure of core strength and core activation and one of many exercises to condition the abdominal muscles.

Measure Your Upper Body Strength!

Muscular strength and muscular endurance training can elicit benefits in increased strength, lean tissue mass, and bone density. Among other things, it can help with managing your weight, contribute to better balance and maintain independence as you age. In addition, strength training can reduce the signs and symptoms of many chronic conditions, such as arthritis, back pain, obesity, heart disease, depression and diabetes. The push-up is a great way to condition upper body musculature and is a common exercise to measure upper body strength from the knees or from the toes.

Measure Your Flexibility!

Flexibility, referring to the degree to which a joint moves through a normal, pain-free range of motion, can be a determining factor in the performance of daily activity as we age. A reduction in tissue elasticity and age-related deterioration of joint anatomy has been shown to decrease flexibility and may lower the performance of daily activity, which can decrease quality of life. The sit-and-reach test is a commonly used test for assessment of flexibility of the hamstrings, hips and lower back.
