Ray (age 98) and Mavis Phaneuf (age 95) have been members of VAC for 25+ years. The couple enjoys swimming in the pool, participating in the senior water aerobics classes, and using the exercise bikes almost daily. Ray & Mavis especially like the sense of community at the club. They have made many friends through the years and feel that the VAC has contributed to their overall health and longevity.
Ray is a retired Navy officer who grew up on the East Coast (Springfield, Massachusetts). He attended the American International College in 1942-46 majoring in Chemistry. He spent time at the Naval Academy in his early days and his first official military duty was in Seattle. Mavis didn’t like living on the East Coast so they made their way back to the Pacific Northwest to raise their 4 children. Ray taught Chemistry at Vashon High School for 17 years.
When Ray and Mavis met, Mavis was attending the University of Washington. Her major was in Physical Education. After graduation, she started the Special Education program on Vashon and taught for 21 years specializing in teaching children with learning difficulties.
Their first date was arranged by a fellow officer on Ray’s ship. Ray talked himself into asking Mavis for a date and was pleasantly surprised when she accepted. Mavis said she knew he was the one when he held her hand on their first date. She loved how cute he was in his officer uniform. Maybe there is such a thing as love at first sight. These two met in July; were engaged in September and married by Thanksgiving.
Mavis and Ray have 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. In 2018 they will celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary.
